The three sit next to each other on the map, and a short drive links all of them. But they feel different, and the right one depends less on the place than on who is coming with you. Here is how we would choose.
A note before we start, so this reads honestly: twenty-nine of our thirty-two homes are in Anjuna, two are in Vagator and one is in Assagao. We are not neutral about Anjuna. We chose it because it puts the other two within easy reach.
Anjuna: the middle of everything
Anjuna is the one people picture when they think of North Goa: the beach, the cafés, pubs and clubs, live music, and the Wednesday flea market from late October to April. From here Vagator is next door and Assagao is about ten minutes inland, so it works as a base even if you plan to spend your days elsewhere.
Best for: almost any group, because the choice of homes is widest here.
- Couples: Mist and Privy, one-bedroom apartments for two (up to three), with a shared pool.
- Friends: the pop-art apartments and villas: Fiesta, La’Vida, Sazz, Secrets, Bonito, Flora, Sassy, Vibe, Glee and Coco (two-bedroom apartments), and Groovy, Tipsy, Aayra, Dazzle, Espresso and Wink (villas). All have a shared pool.
- Families and bigger groups who want privacy: Comet, Halo, Nebula, Stella, Sway, White Lotus and White Aura, three-bedroom villas with their own pools; White Jade, our four-bedroom villa; and Cosmic, Galexa and Skyla, three-floor penthouses with a private rooftop jacuzzi. These sleep up to eight or ten.
Vagator: cliffs and the fort
Vagator is Anjuna’s neighbour to the north, with cliffs over the beach and Chapora Fort above it. Like Anjuna, it has pubs, clubs, music and popular hangouts, so evenings are never far away. It suits a group that wants that scenery on its doorstep.
Best for: friends, and couples.
- Drift, a two-bedroom villa with a shared pool, sleeps four, up to eight.
- Bling, a one-bedroom duplex apartment with a shared pool, sleeps two, up to three.
Assagao: the quieter, greener one
Assagao is inland, about ten minutes’ drive from Anjuna and Vagator beaches. It is known for its old Portuguese-era houses and for some of North Goa’s best-loved restaurants. You give up walking to the sand and gain quiet nights and a slower pace.
Best for: families, and groups who come for food and rest more than for nightlife.
- Starry, a three-bedroom villa with a shared pool, sleeps six, up to ten.
The short version
- Want the widest choice of homes, with everything close by? Anjuna.
- Want the cliffs and the fort on your doorstep? Vagator.
- Want quiet, good food and a slower week? Assagao.
Whichever you choose, the other two are a short drive away, so you are never really choosing only one.
