“Pool” is the word that sells a Goa holiday, and it can mean quite different things. Here is exactly what each of ours means, so there are no surprises when you arrive.

Private pool: the water is yours alone

Eight of our villas have their own pool: Comet, Halo, Nebula, Stella, Sway, White Lotus and White Aura, each with three bedrooms, and White Jade, with four. The pool belongs to the villa. No other guests use it, and you do not share it with anyone outside your group.

What that gets you: the pool whenever you want it, day or night, children in the water without strangers around, and evenings by the water that feel like your own house rather than a resort. Local rules ask for quiet in outdoor areas from 10pm to 8am, so a late swim is a quiet one.

Who it suits: families, groups of six to ten, and anyone for whom privacy is the point of the trip.

Private jacuzzi: a rooftop that is yours

Our three penthouses, Cosmic, Galexa and Skyla, have a private jacuzzi on their own rooftop terrace instead of a pool. Each penthouse takes the whole top of its building across three floors, with its own private lift and entrance, and the jacuzzi is yours at any hour of the day or night, with the same 10pm to 8am quiet hours as any outdoor space.

What that gets you: privacy and a rooftop of your own. The jacuzzi is not heated; in Goa’s warm climate it does not need to be. What it does not get you is a pool to swim in. If swimming lengths matters to your group, choose a private-pool villa instead.

Who it suits: groups of six to ten who care more about a rooftop evening than a morning swim, and anyone who likes the idea of a home stacked over three floors.

Shared pool: a pool to come back to

Our other twenty-one homes, the pop-art apartments and villas in Anjuna, Vagator and Assagao, share a pool within their complex. Shared pools are open from 9am to 7pm.

What that gets you: homes full of colour, some in our best locations, and a pool to come back to after a day out. You share the water with other guests of the complex, and the pool closes in the evening.

Who it suits: couples and friends who will spend their days out at the beaches and want a pool waiting in the afternoon.

How to choose

Start with how you will spend your days. If you will be out at the beaches until late afternoon, a shared pool may be all you need. If the villa is the holiday, and the plan is long days by the water, choose a private pool. And if the best part of your trip is an evening, not a swim, take the rooftop.

Do not choose on price alone. A shared-pool villa in a prime location can cost only a little less than a private-pool villa elsewhere, so compare the home and where it is, not just the pool.
